This is the most common question that is asked. And it’s a very important question. However, many times people respond with vague answers like “I’m okay”. But I’ve realized how important it is to be honest when a close friend asks us this question.
We are all stressed out with the current circumstances. It is like each day becomes more stressful than the previous. For some, our mental health has been affected by almost a year long lockdown. The isolation away from our support network outside our home can be difficult. And that’s why it’s important to be honest when someone asks us “how are you”.
We may feel like a burden being honest. But as I recently learned, no one is a burden. We all have people who care for us. And they just want what’s best for us.
We want people to be honest on how they are feeling, so why should we hide how we feel. Of course, appropriate disclosure should be taken into account.
In addition, we need to bring more humanity into this world. We do not know how the mental health of a stranger might be. Try your best to be that spark of hope for someone. Even a “I am happy to see you today” to a coworker might make their day.
So when it comes to “how are you”, try to be honest. In doing so, we create dialogue.
So, how are you doing today?
